holiday spirits #2

I met M for a holiday hot toddy. We went into one of those loud Manhattan after-work bars that are packed to the rafters with the young lions and lionesses of finance and law. At one point in my life, I enjoyed frequenting these places but now I find both the venues and the people inside them nauseating. Much of my nausea is rooted raw envy. They are all young and good looking with a hopeful future wide open in front of them, whereas I am merely good looking.

This is another phase in my annual holiday tradition of reaching out and getting together with friends who I have not seen in a while. M and I have emailed and spoken over the phone but the last time we sat down and broke bread together was June. It was nice to raise a glass with him. I highly recommend this course of action for everyone. Think of someone you haven’t seen in a while and give him/her a call.

* * *

Have you ever followed someone's blog and then, all of a sudden, they just stop posting? Do you ever wonder what happened to them? Was it something bad or did they simply get bored with blogging? What is the respectable amount of time to wait before removing them from your reader?

good reminder - here in Oh-HI-ya, it's not so much happy hour, but lunch... and there are a few folks i need to track down for lunch this week, or the week between christmas and new years...

i don't remove folks from the reader - some have gone dormant for months, only to reappear... but i sometimes have a problem letting go, so what do i know?

It always cheers me up to get together with an old friend and reminisce. Although it's getting harder and harder to accomplish that as we spread farther out across the country. A phone call just isn't the same.

I do wonder what happened to them, but I've still got blogs in my blog roll that dropped of the face of the Internet and haven't posted in at least a year.

Man I hope I'm not one of those dead bloggers of which you speak. I'm using the blog as a motivator to flesh out a rough draft of a book. Also, I just can't write tidy snarky stuff, I leave that to Clinton over at ZFS! or the surviving myself guy. Proof that I was probably a bookstore clerk in a previous life. Also, I wonder if blogs aren't compatible with what I'm trying to accomplish.

I am very much looking forward to doing what you're doing now, in a week. I haven't seen most of my Pac Northwest friends in a year, and it'll be good again to catch up and reminisce with them. Ditto hanging out at my favorite haunts.

Bloggers are removed from my rolls when I stop reading them not if they stop writing.

daisy: Can you invent a happy lunch hour?

digital: I often feel that if I didn’t make the effort, I’d never see some of these people. But it’s worth it.

sonny: That surviving myself guy gets and insane number of comments! I don’t know how he keeps up with responding. Don’t forget to pick up your signed Irvin Welsh book when you go home.

annie: That makes beautiful sense, but I still feel guilty when I delete someone from my roll. I was raised Catholic, so that could have something to do with it.

Wow. Hi. I'm new over at Daisyfae's blog, and I'm a new regular Gnukid reader as well and through them, you! I can't help myself, I gorge on chewy bloggy goodness to my heart's content around this time of year until I'm disgusted with myself and I can't fit into my life anymore. Then comes the repenting - you won't see me around the first couple weeks of the New Year, but alas, I'll be back by February at the latest...ARE YOU GETTING THIS?????

Anyway, your writing made even Cleveland sound good (my long lost hometown, thank you). Love your style and my god - the cell phone blocker stories. Don't ever stop. Ever.
One question about that - aren't you afraid of misfiring someone's pacemaker or something? You mentioned targeting the elderly which sounds delightful and yet a little sad, but mostly delightful. Before I order my own, I need to know I can't cause a death. I have scruples.

Hi Pickles. Welcome.

Jesus Christ! Thanks for putting THAT in my head! I have no idea if my zapper could kill someone. It never entered my mind. I've unintentionally knocked people off the internet but I don't know nothin' about no stinkin' pacemakers.

I have a folder on my reader called 'dead blogs'. It's like a graveyard for the ones that drop off the radar and go all quiet. I keep them there until the blog itself gets deleted completely.

I always wonder what would happen to my blog if something happened to me. No one would know the passwords to log in and do much about it. That's a bit morbid, isn't it.

As for your last thought, I always wonder when someone goes away. I think boredom is largely it. I occasionally think I'm getting bored but then something happens to drag my attention back. I just leave them on my Reader because I only list updated sites. That way if they come back I'll be the first to know!

Hmmm ... I always wonder what would happen when I died. Who would inform the ppl reading my blog? Hmmm I don't really remove ppl from my list but maybe I should do so.

Yeah, about this: They are all young and good looking with a hopeful future wide open in front of them.

They'll waste it. And someone they'll wake up and they'll be just like you and I.

I looked up cell phone zappers and it turns out they are illegal in Canada and, due to a recent story about a couple of criminals with zappers that nullified the Mounties' police car radio, they're likely to remain so.

Even so, I think I'd like to acquire one at some point. Although I am a little worried about frequent use of that much RF radiation discharging somewhat close to the nether regions of my body.

About bloggers who stop.....gee, hope you're not talking about me. I can't afford to lose any (more) readers.... :-) My excuse? Been busy of late. I can barely keep up with reading blogs let alone write my own. So much to write, so little time.

Happy holidays to you and yours, eh?

Of course, in my previous comment, that was supposed to say "someday they'll wake up".

Freudian slip.
