I'm your top prime cut of meat, I'm your choice*
Today, millions of Americans will visit their local polling stations and vote. This is a critically important mid-term election that will shift the balance of power in Congress.
For the first time in my life, I won't be voting. About six weeks ago, I absent-mindedly got a ticket to the theater tonight. I left for work at 5:30 a.m. and won't be home until about 11:00 p.m. The polls weren't open that early in the morning and they'll have long closed by the time I get home.
The tragedy is not that I won't be voting. The tragedy is that I truly, truly, don't care. It doesn't bother me in the least. I always hated politically apathetic people who didn't exercise their right to vote. In other parts of the world, people either can't vote or are, quite literally, shot at when they try.
But I have been drained dry of any enthusiasm for our political process. On Wednesday morning, a bunch of worthless bums will have been thrown out of office, only to be replaced by a different set of worthless bums. I have no faith that any of the clowns running for office will change Washington in a meaningful, positive way.
I'd rather go out and see a play.
I'm no better than Nero. Shame on me, for allowing them to get under my skin.
* 10 bonus points to anyone who can tell me where this great post title is from without Googling it? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

warm up that fiddle and get out the matches
it is a lesser of two equal evils, isn't it? (yeah, makes no sense and that's the political choice before us.) i haven't a clue re the title, so now, i'm off to google it. (i'll be chuckling in the voting booth for sure, i know!) xoxoox
They should just let us vote for the giant corporations who throw all the money at these public "servants", they obviously have their masters best interests at heart, ever since our "impartial" supreme court (can you hear me laughing) decided corporations were like people only wealthier and with more influence this whole process is a joke.
Gnu: Got any gas to throw on it?
Savannah: I'm glad you're voting. I would have if I didn't have plans, but I'm disappointed that I'm not more disappointed.
Kono: Exactly why I couldn't care less. So? Are you voting?
Elected - Alice Cooper!!!!
I hear ya... I almost didn't vote in our little civic election last week. Didn't like any of the candidates and the old mayor just got re-elected (again) by a huge margin, so it didn't even count that I voted against him. *sigh*
Enjoy your entertainment!!! Much better choice, I think.
Ponita: DING! DING! DING! We have a winnah!
I'm sure the play (a one-man show with comedian Colin Quinn) will be a hell of a lot more satisfying than sitting in front of the TV watching election returns -- which is what I'd be doing if I were home.
Alice Cooper! "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy in a flash Rolls Royce..." (or something along those lines.Been a while since I heard or even thought of it.)
Voting's supposed to be compulsory here, but a lot of folks turn in the "donkey vote" ie,informal papers.
On Saturday, postal votes will be coounted for ONE replacement local councillor. ONE! For all the work that one will do we could have managed without the replacement til full election time. And how much of my rates money was spent on the postal vote, I wonder?
Go! Alice!
Oops! Forgot I was in the cats' account -that was me, Dinah, singing the Alice number.
But go look at what the cats have on their post.
[rant] two comments and then i'll go back under my rock.
1) If you complain EVEN ONCE over the next year about any elected official, i shall smack you in the head. you abandoned your license to bitch.
2) Aren't there local referendums? school levies? municipal fire/police issues? library levies? on the ballot? We've gotten SO bogged down in the bullshit of personality politics, that we've forgotten that WE MUST ENGAGE ON LOCAL ISSUES.
[/rant]
Enjoy the show! Are we going to get a review? :-)
MIT: The song creeps back into my consciousness around every election. It's burned in there to stay, it seems. Go Alice! Go Democracy!
Daisy: You have to cut me some slack. I didn't intentionally avoid voting. It just happened. In fact, if I was aware of the conflict, I wouldn't have gone. So it goes.
Having had a sniff around the southern end of the good old USA earlier this year, even I wonder what the 'worthless bums' in office have been doing all this time - certainly not sorting out the problems I saw.
But then the same can be said for just about every country in the world, I think.
It has a Texas sound - I'm guessing Johnson - but what do I know?
Ah... Alice Cooper.... no I wouldn't have guessed
....a government of the people by the people and for the people....and we all made the bed....
Good for you daisyfae for reminding of us that politics is local. Think globally, act locally.
Jo: Our government dysfunction is much more...ummm...dysfunctional than your government's dysfunction. At lest you seem to be able to come to a consensus. We can't even manage that much.
Pat: Not politics, at all. It's rock and roll.
Nurse: I'm thinking you're too young for Alice Cooper's heyday.
JZ: I can assure you it won't happen again. But I'm not tortured by it.
Alice's hey day may be over but he's still going strong over here. And 'Schools out' will always be a favourite with me.
