New York = Rat Town, U.S.A.!
New York City isn't all beautiful snowfalls and elegant skylines. (See previous post for that.) In the interest of fair and balanced reporting, I submit the following. The best part: watch the riders on the subway. Casually lifting their feet and ho-humming the whole thing. True New Yorkers to the bone! Hilarious. Unless it happens to you.

That one cheeky mutha rat!
Can you please have a limo ready for my arrival? :¬)
i dunno. rats are pretty damn fast, so i'm not sure there was much anyone could do about it... chasing it or throwning things at it might have just pissed it off. and maybe the one thing worse than a rat riding the subway is a pissed off rat riding the subway.
Map: Hope that hasn't scared you off. That sort of thing doesn't happen too often.
Daisy: They did the very thing they SHOULD have done: filmed it!
It pays to have a Jack Russel terrier in your bag for times like that!!!
and that wasn't even a BIG rat, right, sugar? *shiver* xoxoxo
OMG I would be freaking out I can't believe there was no screaming going on.
MT
Oh God that was a good laugh. I never ran into any rats on the F train, other than pocket pickers (twice) who I had to shoo (er, smack) away, Bold. Very bold.
So...what happened to all the bed bugs? I guess news stories are always written in quick-fade ink. ;-)
Ratatouille II: Remy does New York.
Ponita: Remember, these are New York rats. It might require firearms.
Sav: Actually, I believe that was just a mouse.
MT: I would have screamed like a little girl. But New Yorkers are cool cucumbers.
Jayne: Actually, my friend and I were laughing our asses off but I felt kind of bad afterward. That's a hell of a wake-up call.
MIT: Yes, I'll bet that guy only wishes he had a run-in with a bedbug instead.
kykn: "This time, it's Remy's turn to dine." Perfect tag line.
Holy shite that is a big rat. If Mrs. Sausage had seen that on the subway then our NYC oddyssey would be done.
I'm rather fond of rats. Clever little blighters. I had one in my hand bag the other day. Very sweet.
So that's one place I shall never, never, ever go again. I'm not sure I ever did - come to think of it.
Why do i suddenly want to sing Ben by Wacko Jacko.
SF: Yes, it only takes one foul incident and the whole trip is spoiled.
Dolce: I like rats if they're domesticated in cages. On the public transport? Notsomuch.
Pat: It was the #4 train. I'm sure the rest of them are fine.
Kono: Ben was black. Socrates was white. That guy was a dirty distant cousin.
You've obviously not seen a JRT go after a rodent. They are fierce, mightly fierce. And fearless too. A little packet of TNT armed with teeth and lightning fast speed. Very good ratters, they are! And a better aim than a gun...
Interesting. I suppose that rats just become part of the landscape eventually.
Actually, I felt sort of sorry for the rat, I don't think it really wanted to be on the train.
I came home on a #4 the other night. Must have been another compartment.
Ponita: The JRT might be more fierce, but what a mess! One clean shot it all you need. And not hit any passengers. There's that.
HMH: You can't blame the poor rat. He never asked to be on an uptown 4 train. He probably jumped the turnstile, to boot.
MIT: I'm quite GLAD you weren't on that train! That's not the kind of experience I want you to have while you're here.
With passengers jumping around trying to avoid the rat AND you with a gun... I think I'd rather bet on the JRT for less mess. Grab, bite, shake and it's all over. They don't rip things to shreds, just break the neck.
Missing with the gun could be a helluva lot messier! ;-)
OH MY GOD.
We've been debating whether this was someone's pet rat--he's rather clean and attractive for a subway denizen. What do you think? Possibly?
Ellie: That was my reaction. That and laughing my ass off.
Leah: It's funny you should say that. Mrs. Wife is convinced beyond any doubt that it's all staged. I don't think it is.
You have shiny golden rats in NYC, everything is glossier there, our rats are a horrid browny-gray.
Just watched this video. Totally creeped me out. Then I shared the link with my friends =)
