The Unbearable Banishment: What, Me Worry?

What, Me Worry?

About three weeks ago I did a post about my credit card being stolen out of my gym locker and how afterwards I identified the thief in an NYPD lineup [this post]. The odd twist was that the thief, it turned out, was a foot soldier in the Albanian mob! Ha ha! The Albanian mob! How ridiculous! That’s a good one.

I, like most bloggers, like to keep track of the visitors to my site. Last night, my tracking software indicated that I had a visitor from Montenegro. That visitor found my blog by entering the following search phrase into Google:

credit card thieves in nyc gyms

Should I be concerned about this? Why would someone from that part of the planet need to find information about credit cards stolen out of gym lockers a half a world away? Gulp.

Maybe the searcher was looking for a friend and Facebook wasn't delivering the desired results?

A friend who happens to be an Albanian mobster with a penchant for breaking into lockers? Or, perhaps, the rat who squealed on such a friend?

Ann says, "Ask him if he has ever seen the movie 'Eastern Promises'."

I see where you are maybe a bit paranoid. I posted one time about internet access problems I was having from work, to the point of essentially reproducing verbiage from the trouble ticket that spelled out some user behaviour that was causing network problems. Within a day I had a site view based on a google search for a string that would only be contained in our internal trouble tickets.

I took the post down for a day or so, but decided WTF and later put it back up.

It is a bit unsettling, isn't it?

Remember, we're really not all that anonymous here on the interwebs.

They were probably looking for clues on how to avoid being caught next time. Seems more likely than plotting a revenge killing. ;)

Besides, they can't find you through this blog. In the mid 90's I used to post my home address in my signature on usenet posts (hundreds of them), and had detailed images of my drivers license and passport on my web site. I was inviting trouble, daring loudmouths and bullies to "come and get me," but they never came.

Wrongheadedness and masochism aside, it's more difficult than people think to track someone down based on internet clues. Unless they leave you explicit instructions. And only an idiot would do that.

I'm sure you're totally fine.

In the mean time, can you change my name on all my past comments?

That is a really odd coincidence.

The Albanian organized crime is probably going hi-tech and doing some research. I doubt it’s about any possible vendetta on you personally. I hope.

all: When I started this idiot blog last Spring, my sister, who is more media and internet savvy than I’ll ever be, read me the riot act about not using real names or posting any photos—especially photos of my family. That has gone a long way towards feeding my paranoia—justifiable or not!

President Obama will protect you.

But really, names and pictures aside, you don't exactly run in a small town (or small towns). You would be difficult to track down, even using any clues you've provided here.

Don't fear the Albanians. Remember, John Belushi was Albanian, and he wouldn't hurt a fly.

Well you don't have your address or anything on this blog ... right? I think you should be fine.
