My iTouch is a living entity
God, I hate exercising. It's boring, it's time consuming and, if you're doing it properly, it hurts like hell. But I'm an old dad. I started a family very late in life. [My friends back in Ohio have kids in college. I have a 3-Year old.] I owe it to The Daughters and to Mrs. Wife to stay as healthy as possible for as long as possible. So I exercise. And, God, I hate it. But I have to do it for their sake.
I went out for a run today. Plugged in my earbuds, put my iTouch on shuffle and it spit out the following:
Keep Yourself Alive by Queen
Lust for Life by Iggy Pop
Father and Daughter by Paul Simon
Cure for Pain by Morphine
Dear Mr. Jobs: This isn't the first time something like this has happened. Please stop FUCKING with me, man!
Mapstew did a post congratulating Sesame Street on its 40th anniversary. I was just outside the curve and never benefited from Sesame Street, however, I remember seeing a parody of Billy Idol's Rebel Yell. It was called Rebel L and it was about the letter "L." They had an emotionally tormented punk Billy Idol Muppet and used the same camera angles and attitude as the actual video for Rebel Yell. It holds up well and it gave me a laugh.

What? Paul Simon can't get that heart pumping?
I'm 45 and my kids are 17 and 14, but I have friends my same age with kids ranging from babies to grandbabies. It's very different from our parents generation when they started and stopped having kids in their twenties.
Cat: Oh, I don't have a problem getting my heartrate up. It usually happens within the first 1/8th of a mile or so. But the appropriateness of these selections gave me the creeps.
It's a different world. I don't feel freakish at all for having kids late in the game. In fact, it's a damn good thing I waited. If I had had kids in my 20s, it probably would have crashed and burned.
I NEED to start exercising, I need to tone up but I can always find an excuse not to. My folks on the other hand are training for a marathon. They like challenges.
Age doesn't matter my friend. it's the love that counts. You're a good faither.
I've started back at the gym recently for the same reason as you. And my iPod touch is crucial to the gym experience - I value that link it makes with my brain when it is on shuffle!
made the mistake of watching the sesame street video before i left for work this morning. and had a mother of an earworm all day... sheesh...
I don't mean to be contrar-ian, but I love exercise. There is always a bit of dread before doing it; and I hate being pulled out of my bed at 5am on weekdays just so I can fit in a workout. But, I love it while I'm doing and, of course, just after. But that's me ... at this current moment in time. We're all different and we change! Good for you for doing it despite hating it!
Sid: It'll be a hell of a lot easier for you to start now while you're young vs. starting when you're my age!
Jimmy: Love is the most important thing, but being able to play tag in the back yard without passing out doesn't hurt.
AFM: Music is crucial to combat the boredom that is inherent in exercise.
Daisy: You are most susceptible to earworms, aren't you?
Ellie: I bitch a lot about exercise but I'm always leave the gym in a pretty happy mood.
My iPod totally creeps me out sometimes. Last week I had the group over that I went to England with last summer. I had the iPod in the speakers turned to shuffle and it started playing all the songs we had loved most while traveling. Very strange.
I forced myself to create a playlist called "work out" on my Ipod to avoid having one of my Enigma songs meant for sex or depressing songs meant to make me cry pop up and give me a reason to can the exercise.
Discovered your blog today - like very much. Plus, your header photo makes you look like Richard Gere from behind. Looks like life is working for you.
Keep it up pal, and hopefully you'll be giving love to that kid when she's bringing up her own.
And Jimmy is right, age does not matter.
My best friend, another Jimmy, and his (much younger) wife had their first baby 11 months ago. (He's 45). The love for his wee daughter is such a joy to see.
A good weekend to you and your family pal.
