The change of a season

After Steve Jobs passed away, these Post-It Note tributes popped up at Apple stores across the city. This is the Soho store. I thought the "sad Mac" was really clever.

* * *

I took 5-Year Old Daughter to the local town Halloween parade this afternoon. [9-Year Old was away at a birthday party at the Silverball Pinball Museum in Asbury Park. The Zombie Walk was also on tap for the Asbury Park boardwalk. I was wishing I was there.] After the parade, I watched some football. It is the clearest evidence yet that Fall has arrived. Time for thick sweaters, all-day pots of hot coffee and roast beef sandwiches. I love the change of the season and don't know how those who live in a uni-climate can stand it.

The suburbs have their Autumnal charms; the colorful leaves, the fragrance of burning leaves in the air, the hay rides and Fall festivals. New York City is lacking any of these natural beauties, but there's definitely a feeling of change in the air when Autumn arrives. Theater activity is picking up. [A play written by and starring Jesse Esienberg last week and Love's Labor's Lost at The Public this week.] I've posted this video for the past couple of years. Billie Holiday really captures the essence of walking through town on those shorter days and cooler nights.

Aw! Shucks! Ya hadda go an' tease me, huh?

It's a double-whammy, as I'm taunted by southern spring colours in one hemisphere and fall brilliance in the other.
Still, that song makes up for it. ;-)

Personally, I think that's a bit much with the sticky notes and what have you. Dude was a genius, but he was also a shrewd businessman and in my opinion and awfully greedy little guy. He had all philanthropy nixed from his multi-billion dollar company and also had an illegitimate child he refused to acknowledge or support. That being said I am glad he made the iPod.

i miss kids and costumes, going out on beggars night and the magic that comes with it. it was usually warm out, and you'd be out in this warm, dark, crisp night - and hear voices!

i miss the candy i would swipe from them, too...

dinah: *I'm* not teasing you! New York City is teasing you! I'm just the conduit.

EMM: People have an (unhealthy) emotional attachment to the gadgets that that guy provided, so I understand they would grieve for his passing. Currently, there's a one-man show at The Public Theater in Manhattan called The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs. Someone went to China to observe how Apple products are manufactured and, apparently, it's not pretty.

daisy: All that will take place one week from tonight. I'll bet you never had to examine the candy for sharp instruments, did you?

I'm with you re: loving autumn and not getting how folks who live where there is no such thing handle it. I'm a runner and I ran in a 5K race yesterday in Livingston NJ on a course that passed thru tree-lined streets. Race time was 9:30 so it was brisk but not uncomfortably cold and there was just that smell of autumn in the air. Simply great day to run and to spend time outside.

Steve Jobs, loads of psuedo-philanthropic crap but products built on slavery in SE Asia. His devices have a religious magic for their followers. No tears from this corner. He was a capitalist, an exploiter. Everyone who buys one of his project should also be made to read Walter Benjamin's essay on the The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, about how a product's aura is so bright that it blinds people into quasi-religious admiration.

Anyway, as you can tell, I've been in University for too long...on a happier note - I love autumn, it's my favourite season. I like the change in the air, the way you have to get a different wardrobe out, the quality of the light.

AK: My wife ran a 5K yesterday in Middletown. Jesus! It's an epidemic! Livingston would be a pretty area to run though. Nice wx for it, too.

looby: Yeah, that's what the play is all about. Apparently, the Chinese toil over these products. The suicide rate is quite high and the work is so repetitive and physically grueling that many of them are ruined for life. I thought technology was supposed to set us free?

the smell of burning leaves...one of the things I miss here in (usually) sunny Southern CA. But I didn't know one could still burn leaves in NJ?

Nana: Well...you're not supposed to burn leaves but I always catch the fragrance in the air.

nurse: We were born too late, don't you think?
